After months of negotiating a fight with the Lineal Middleweight champ Miguel Cotto, and failing to get the deal done, #1 rated Junior Middleweight Saul “Canelo” (44-1-1, 31KO’s) Alvarez will face of against James Kirkland (32-1, 28KO’s) some time in May.  The two fighters have agreed to terms to square off with each other, but have not yet settled on a date because of the ongoing Mayweather-Pacquiao saga, that should take place on May 2nd.

“The fight is done.  It’s the Clash of the Titans.  Canelo Alvarez is fighting James Kirkland.  The fight is signed, sealed, and delivered”, said Oscar De La Hoya, but didn’t specify on the date because of obvious reasons.  De La Hoya also said that Canelo will not fight on May 2nd if the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is made, and also added that we will know more details in the next couple of days.

James Kirkland is actually a very good opponent for Saul Alvarez.  He holds notable TKO victories against Brian Vera in 2008, Alfredo Angulo in 2011 (Angulo was never the same), and most recently against Glen Tapia in 2013, whom he wiped out in 6 rounds.  Kirkland will test Canelo’s chin with his heavy hands, and we will have to see if he has enough boxing skill to defeat him.

Canelo came off his first loss in 2013 to Floyd Mayweather, and also wiped out Alfredo Angulo, who at this point is just a shell of his former self.  Then he got a very controversial split decision victory last year against Erislandy Lara, in a fight that I personally thought Alvarez lost.  So Alvarez has not been overly impressive as he was in the past, but then again, the class of opponent has definitely risen for him.  It will be interesting to see how he handles Kirkland.
