On Saturday August 29 2015, Premier boxing Champions Presents to you, Leo Santa Cruz (30-0-1, 17 KO’s) VS Abner Mares (29-1-1, 15 KO’s).  The event will be live on ESPN at 10 pm eastern time from the Staples Center in Los Angeles California.  Also on the card will be Alfredo Angulo (23-5, 19 KO’s) VS Hector Munoz (23-15-1, 15 KO’s), and in the co-feature it will be Julio Ceja (29-1, 26 KO’s) VS Hugo Ruiz (35-2, 31 KO’s).  They will fight for the interim WBC Super Bantamweight title.  Here is the breakdown and my predictions:

-Record:  30 – 0 – 1, 17 KO’s

-Weight Class:  Junior Featherweight (122 pounds) / also: Featherweight (126 pounds) & Bantamweight (118 pounds).

-Height:  5′ 7″ (170 cm)

-Reach:  69″

-Born:  8/10/88 (age 27)

-Notable Fights:

  • Vusi Malinga  —  Win, Unanimous Decision (12), 6/2/12.  (Won IBF Bantamweight Title)
  • Victor Tarrazas  —  Win, TKO 3rd round (12), 8/24/13.  (Won WBC Junior Featherweight Title)
  • Cristian Mijares  —  Win, Unanimous Decision (12), 3/8/14.  (Retained WBC Junior Featherweight Title)

Leo Santa Cruz is coming off of a very nice 10 round fight in which he was awarded a unanimous decision victory.  He defeated Cayetano, in what was a very interesting fight.  Santa Cruz has not yet fought any elite opposition, but has the skills to do so.  Abner Mares will be his biggest test to date this coming Saturday.

-Notable Fights:

  • Vic Darchinyan  —  Win, Unanimous Decision (12), 12/11/10.  (Won vacant WBC silver & IBO Bantamweight Titles)
  • Joseph Agbeko #1  —  Win, Majority Decision (12), 8/13/11.  (Won IBF Junior Featherweight title)
  • Daniel Ponce de Leon  —  Win, TKO 9th round (12), 5/4/13.  (Won WBC Featherweight Title)

Since getting knocked out by Jhonny Gonzalez in a first round KO fluke, Mares has won 3 fights in a row.  He defeated Jonathan Oquendo by UD (7/12/14), Jose Ramirez by TKO (12/13/14), and Arturo Santos Reyes by UD (3/7/15).  Mares has fought slightly better opposition then Santa Cruz has, but none the less, Santa Cruz will also be his toughest opponent to date.
