This Saturday night January 16 2016, live on Showtime Championship Boxing, WBC World Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder (35-0, 34 KO’s) puts his title on the line against the raw power punching contender Artur Szpilka (21-1, 15 KO’s).  This will be Szpilka’s first attempt at a world title, and Wilder’s third title defense.  In the co-feature Vyacheslav Glazkov (21-0-1, 13 KO’s) and Charles Martin (22-0-1, 20 KO’s) will go at it for the vacant IBF World Heavyweight Championship.  Also on the card, Middleweights Derrick Findley 22-17, 14 KO’s) VS Maciej Sulecki (21-0, 6 KO’s), Heavyweights Adam Kownacki (12-0, 10 KO’s) VS Danny Kelly (9-1-1, 8 KO’s), and Light Heavyweights Mike Lee (15-0, 9 KO’s) VS Joe Gardener (11-8-1, 1 KO).  Here is the breakdown and predictions:

-Record:  35 – 0 – 0, 34 KO’s

-Weight Class:  Heavyweight (no limit)

-Height:  6′ 7″

-Reach:  83″

-Born:  8/22/85 (age 30)

-Notable Fights:

  • Malik Scott  —  Win, KO 1st round (12), 3/15/14.
  • Bermane Stiverne  —  Win, Unanimous Decision (12), 1/17/15.  (Won WBC Heavyweight Title)
  • Eric Molina  —  Win, KO 9th round (12), 6/13/15.

Wilder showed everyone that he is not just a 4 round knockout artist, when he took the WBC world heavyweight title from Bermane Stiverne, by going 12 rounds and beating him on the scorecards.  Since then, Wilder has voluntarily defended his title twice, and won both times by KO.  Wilder’s mandatory contender is #1 WBC Alexander Povietkin, but Wilder will take one more voluntary defense (Artur Szpilka) before then.

-Record:  21 – 1 – 0, 15 KO’s

-Weight Class:  Heavyweight (no limit)

-Height:  6′ 4″

-Born:  4/12/89 (age 26)

-Notable Fights:

  • Bryant Jennings  —  Loss, TKO 10th round (10), 1/25/14.
  • Tomasz Adamek  —  Win, Unanimous Decision (10), 11/8/14.  (Won IBF international Heavyweight Title)
  • Manuel Quezada  —  Win, TKO 3rd round (8), 6/12/15.

Artur Szpilka has only fought one top tier opponent to date (Bryant Jennings), and now he gets an opportunity of a lifetime to face Wilder for the WBC title.  Szpilka has never fought a 12 round fight, so conditioning could be a factor here and work against him.  The longer the fight lasts, the more it favors Wilder, even though he is a huge favorite already.  Look for Szpilka to load up and try to score and early KO, as that would be his best chance to win.

  • Mike Lee  —  def  —  Joe Gardener  —  via  —  KO 4th round
  • Adam Kownacki  —  def  —  Danny Kelly  —  via  —  TKO 6th round
  • Maciej Sulecki  —  def  —  Derrick Findley  —  Unanimous Decision
  • Vyacheslav Glazkov  —  def  —  Charles Martin  —  via  —  Unanimous Decision
  • Deontay Wilder  —  def  —  Artur Szpilka  —  via  —  TKO 7th round
