Tomorrow night, Saturday January 23 2016, boxing returns to FOX.  Danny “Swift” Garcia (31-0, 18 KO’s) takes on Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (33-3-1, 18 KO’s) for the vacant WBC Welterweight Title.  It is yet another chapter of the Puerto Rico VS Mexico rivalry.  The fight will be televised on FOX at 8pm ET, and take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles California.  The co-feature is a welterweight bout between Sammy Vasquez (20-0, 14 KO’s) and Aaron Martinez (20-4-1, 4 KO’s).  Also on the card, a heavyweight bout, as Dominic Breazeale (16-0, 14 KO’s) takes on Amir Mansour (22-1-1, 16 KO’s).  Here is the breakdown and predictions:

-Record:  31 – 0 – 0, 18 KO’s

-Weight Class:  Welterweight (147 lbs)

-Height:  5′ 9″

-Reach:  69″

-Born:  3/20/88 (age 27)

-Notable Fights:

  • Amir Khan  —  Win, TKO 4th round (12), 7/14/12.  (Won WBAsuper & TheRing Junior Welterweight titles)
  • Zab Judah  —  Win, Unanimous Decision (12), 4/27/13.
  • Lucas Matthysse  —  Win, Unanimous Decision (12), 9/14/13.

Since his career making performance against Lucas Matthysse, Garcia has not been great. He escaped with a highly questionable decision over Mauricio Herrera and a narrow split decision over Lamont Peterson.  In between those fights he KO’d Rod Salka who never stood a chance, and was hand picked.  After Peterson, Garcia KO’d Paulie Malignaggi, who is also well past his prime, and was never at Garcia’s caliber anyway.  Garcia needs a strong performance to stay relevant, especially with the move up to welterweight.

-Record:  33 – 3 – 1, 18 KO’s

-Weight Class:  Welterweight (147 lbs)

-Height:  5′ 8″

-Reach:  70″

-Born:  3/27/83 (age 32)

-Notable Fights:

  • Andre Berto  —  Win, Unanimous Decision (12), 11/24/12.
  • Floyd Mayweather  —  Loss, Unanimous Decision (12), 5/4/13.
  • Keith Thurman  —  Loss, Unanimous Decision (12), 3/7/15.

After beating Andre Berto, Guerrero got the chance to fight Floyd Mayeather.  He failed miserably.  Another big name on his resume was Keith Thurman.  He lost that fight as well.  Guerrero has not been able to beat the “A” opponent.  This could very well be his last chance at a big fight like this, so it will be interesting to see how he reacts to the pressure.
