Last night on Premiere Boxing Champions, Errol Spence Jr (20-0, 17 KO’s) defeated New York native Chris Algieri (21-3, 8 KO’s) via 5th round TKO victory.  Spence became the first man to knock Algieri out, something that Ruslan Provodnikov, Manny Pacquaio, and Amir Khan could not do.  Also, Krzysztof Glowacki successfully defended his Cruiserweight title against Steve Cunningham, knocking him down 3 times en route to a unanimous decision victory.  Marcus Browne also got a highly controversial split decision victory against Radivoje Kalajdzic, in a fight that most thought Kalajdzic actually won.  The referee made a bad call in the first round when Kaladzic clearly slipped, by calling it a knockdown.  That was probably the difference in the close fight, and the final tallies were a little bit of a robbery.

Algieri gives many top fighters fits in the ring with his extremely technically sound boxing abilities.  He overcame multiple knockdowns from Provodnikov, and went on to win a split decision, and he also almost outboxed Amir Khan, in a fight that some thought Khan actually lost.  That was not the case last night against Errol Spence Jr.  Algieri kept insisting that he is not just an opponent, and thats exactly what he became.  Nothing but a stepping stone for the superior talent that is Errol Spence Jr.

Algieri showed fancy footwork in the first round to go along with a decent jab, circling nicely around Spence.  That would not last long, as Spence would begin to get the better of the former world champion in round 2.  Spence would continue to land beautiful combinations in the coming rounds, and his incredible speed and power were too much for Algieri to handle.  After 2 knockdowns, Algieri would get up and continue to fight on very wobbly feet.  Spence would hit him to the body with a sort right hook that would make Algieri drop his hands.  With Algieri’s face wide open, Spence would then completely wipe him out with a wound up huge left hand.  After the fight Spence would remind everyone that he is now Kell Brook’s mandatory contender stating; “I’m the No. 1 contender to Kell Brook, so Kell Brook knows what time it is. “We got to get in the ring and fight; Danny Garcia and all the rest of the welterweight champions. I want them all, doesn’t matter who.”
