Last night on HBO Boxing, Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (30-0-1, 26 KO’s) defeated Isaac Chilmeba (24-4-2, 10 KO’s) in Russia, to retain his WBAsuper/WBO/IBF/IBO world light heavyweight titles.  The fight went the distance, and Kovalev came out with the unanimous decision victory.  Chilemba would prove to be a nice tune-up fight for Kovalev before he has to fight Andre Ward, with his shifty and awkward style.  Chilemba is a somewhat defensive fighter, which was a nice experience for Kovalev, as he gets set for Ward.  Kovalev started off strong, pressuring Cilemba, and outlanding him in every round.  He was also landing the harder and more effective shots.  Chilemba avoided the knockout blows though, and gave Kovalev fits with his jab.  overtime Kovalev got on a roll, Chilemba would stop it with his jab, even though he was losing all the rounds.

Chilemba would win the 5th and 6th, which would be his only winning rounds.  Kovalev would finally break through Chilemab’s pure boxing abilities in the 7th round, when he landed a monster right hand that put Chilemba down.  Chilemba would get up and ,are it out of the round, but on wobbly feet.  In the 8th, Chilemba would get beat so bad that the unofficial scorer gave Kovalev another 10-8 round, even without a knockdown.  Kovalev would continue to rock Chilemba’s bell for the rest of the fight, and in the 11th, he nailed him again.  Chilemba would not go down however, and would make it through the 12th round as well.  The final scores were 117-110, 116-111, and 118-109.
