Last night on ShowTime Championship Boxing, underdog Carl “The Jackal” Frampton (23-0, 14 KO’s) defeated Leo Santa Cruz (32-1-1, 18 KO’s) via majority decision.  This was Frampton’s first fight at featherweight, and he made the most of the title shot opportunity.  One judge had the fight a draw at 114-114, while the other two gave Frampton the nod with scores of 116-112, and 117-111.  While Santa Cruz outworked Frampton, and threw almost 300 punches more, Framptons connect percentage was higher, and the judges noticed that he landed the more meaningful shots.  Frampton deserved the victory, even though it could have gone the other way, strictly based on punch output, which Santa Cruz always wins.

Frampton won the first five rounds of the fight with precise counter shot.  Santa Cruz was putting the pressure on him from the beginning, and even though he was trowing more punches, Frampton’s counter shots were timely and effective.  Frampton stunned Santa Cruz in the second round and almost put him down, but Leo was able to somehow stay on his feet.  Even with the huge amount of pushes thrown by Santa Cruz, but fighters were landing the same amount, and Frampton was throwing far less.  The left hook was key for Carl, as Santa Cruz had no answer for it.  Throughout the entire fight, it seemed as if Frampton could land that punch at will.  In the end, it was just enough for the judges to see, and they made the correct decision.  Frampton stays undefeated, and becomes the first man from Northern Ireland to win world titles in 2 weight classes.

Mikey Garcia (35-0, 29 KO’s) was back in action in the co-feature, as he defeated Elio Rojas (19-2, 13 KO’s).  Garcia got the TKO in the 5th round, after putting Rojas down several times in the fight.  Tony Harrison (24-1, 20 KO’s) also got a victory last night over Sergey Robchenko (27-2, 20 KO’s) via 9th round TKO.  Paulie Malignaggi (36-7, 7 KO’s) was also in action, as he took on fellow Brooklyn native Gabriel Bracero (24-3, 5 KO’s), and defeated him via unanimous decision.
