March 4th 2017 will be an exciting day for the boxing world, as two of the biggest stars in the Welterweight division will go head to head. WBC Welterweight champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (32-0, 18 KO’s) and WBA welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman (27-0, 22 KO’s) will go at it to unify their titles. Garcia has a date with Samuel Vargas first on November 12th, but it has been made official that he and Thurman will fight in March.
Garcia defeated Robert Guerrero back in January of this year to capture the vacant WBC welterweight title, and has not fought since. Thurman successfully defended his WBA welterweight title back in June, when he got a narrow unanimous decision victory against Shawn Porter. This is a very intriguing matchup because both men are excellent counter punchers, but can also move forward very effectively. I would have to say that of the two men, Thurman is the more aggressive fighter, but has shown recently that he is also very dangerous off of his back foot. Garcia is a known counter puncher, but can really bring it when he smells blood.
The fight is still quite some time away, so a venue has not been chosen yet. Danny Garcia does still have an obstacle to overcome, much like Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev took tune up fights, even though they already agreed to fight each other. Samuel Vargas will pose no threat to Garcia, but as they say, one punch can change everything. Garcia must keep focused against Vargas if he wants his future to be safe. No fighter can be taken lightly, especially when he’s hurt, but Vargas will be very out matched against Garcia. We look forward to March, and this great natch up.
