This Saturday, March 14th of 2015, live on HBO at 9:45 ET time, tune in to see Sergey Kovalev put his WBA(super) WBO and IBF Light Heavyweight titles on the line against hungry challenger Jean Pascal.  Kovalevs has been on a tear thru the light heavyweight division.  That includes the KO of Cedric Agnew, the TKO of Blake Capperello, and the UD total destruction of the legendary Bernanrd Hopkins, one must raise the question.  Can anyone beat this man?

Kovalev now finds himself a formidable opponent.  Pascal will be his toughest test, besides Bernard Hopkins of course.  Pascal lost to Hopkins via UD back on May the 21st of 2011, but has since resurrected his career with a few nice victories.  The one that really made him a Light Heavyweight player again and got him back to career making fights, was his UD victory over Lucian Bute in January of 2014.  Pascal is hungry again, and now has Roy Jones in his corner.  This should be a tremendous matchup between two of the best in the division.  So without further ado, this is how both fighters break down:

SERGEY KOVALEV

-Record:  26 – 0 – 1 (23 KO’s)

-Weight Class:  Light Heavyweight (175 lbs)

-Height:  6′ 0″

-Reach:  72″

-Notable Fights:

  • Nathan Cleverly – Win, TKO 4th round, 8/17/13.  (Won WBO Light Heavyweight Title)
  • Blake Caparello – Win, TKO 2nd round, 8/2/14.  (Retained WBO Light Heavyweight Title)
  • Bernard Hopkins – Win, UD 12 rounds, 11/8/14.  (Retained WBO, won WBAsuper, IBF Light Heavyweight titles)

Sergey Kovalev brings 3 titles to the table along with an undefeated record.  He has mowed down everyone that was put in front of him, including a future hall of famer.  Everyones though process was that Kovalev is a dangerous knockout artist that disposes of his foes quickly.  Against Hopkins he proved that he is also a very skilled boxer that can go the distance, and also possesses a very high ring intelligence.  Is another win looming for the “Krusher”?

JEAN PASCAL

-Record:  29 – 2 – 1, 1NC (17 KO’s)

-Weight Class:  Light Heavyweight (175 lbs)

-Height:  5′ 11″

-Reach:  72″

-Notable Fights:

  • Chad Dawson – Win, TKO 11th round, 8/14/10.  (Retained WBC, won TheRing Light Heavyweight titles)
  • Bernard Hopkins #1 – Draw, SD 12 rounds, 12/18/10.  (Retained WBC, TheRing Light Heavyweight titles)
  • Lucian Bute – Win, UD 12 rounds, 1/18/14.  (Won NABF Light Heavyweight Title)

Jean Pascal is a former WBC world champion.  He is the current NABF champion (minor title).  He’s got the credentials, but does he have the chin to withstand Kovalevs’ power?  Pascal was beaten in the rematch against Hopkins.  Most people go nowhere quickly after fighting Bernard.  He destroys you mentally.  Pascal came back from that and eventually got the biggest win of his career against Lucian Bute.  He is mentally tough, and he’s got decent power in both hands to go along with boxing skill.  He gets the opportunity of a lifetime against Kovalev, with a chance to win not 1, not 2, but 3 championships.  That kind of day doesn’t come along very often.  Can he do it?

Prediction:  Sergey Kovalev  —  def  —  Jean Pascal  —  via  —  TKO 8th round
